The good news is the Lady Skyrockets' opening-round score of 390 was good enough for a tie with Baird and all but assured them of bringing home a medal after today's final round at the Morris Williams Course.
The bad news is both teams are 37 shots behind first-place Martins Mill and have virtually no chance to overtake the leader today.
''It was raining when we started playing,'' Wellington coach Kurt Ashmore said. ''That's not the reason we didn't play well because it was raining for all of the teams.
''Honestly we just didn't play well. Martins Mill was the only team that played relatively well. In reality, you can't make up 37 shots in one round.
''The good thing is us and Baird are 32 shots in front of fourth-place Merit Bland, and they aren't likely to make up that many shots, either. So realistically, we're going to finish either second or third and will medal. We wanted to win but just put ourselves in a tough spot.''
In the boys tournament at the same layout, White Deer's Cameron Swarb shot 2-over 74 and is tied for first place with Logan Philley of Robert Lee.
Swarb, who finished second last year, is in excellent position to medal again and could bring home the gold with a good round today. After his round he headed to the tennis courts to compete in the 1A doubles with his brother Cragar.
Macy Davis of Memphis competed as an individual in the 1A girls tournament and shot an opening round of 9-over 81, which left her tied for third along with Olton's Macalee Lane. Two-time defending champion Gabriella Dominguez of Chilton shot 2-under 70 to lead the field, while Petrolia's Brittany Smith shot even-par 72.
Carly Holland led Wellington's effort with an 87, good for eighth place individually. Also playing for Wellington are Kayla Ashmore (96), Kacy Bartlett (103), Megan Rodriguez (104) and Lindsay Allred (115).
Sunray's Dale Schuman shot an opening round of 18-over 90.
