Welcome to Mrs. Lermon’s computer classes.  I am very excited to start the 2007-2008 school year. The class rules are the same for all classes; the syllabus for each class will provide you with the basic plan for the six-weeks, grading policies and other information.  Click on the link above to navigate to the section for your class.

8th Grade Technology Applications Course Description

 

This is a Technology Applications course that will be completed in 1 semester.  Through the study of technology applications, including technology related terms, concepts, and data input strategies, students will learn to make informed decisions about technologies and their applications.  Students will learn to use the word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation software as well as simple application of database files.  Students will receive the foundations needed to be successful in the coming high school technology classes.

Syllabus for 8th Grade Technology Applications

 

This year 8th grade will be expanding on their existing skills in Microsoft Word.  They will also explore basic Excel functions and learn PowerPoint basics as well.  Students will learn the business industry standards for documentation and presentation of written materials.

 

Grading Policy

 

Tests or Project will be counted twice and daily work once in the grade book.  Participation grades for the students active effort on Activities or Projects and will count as daily grades.  Major projects may count as more than one tests grade, students will be given the grading criteria for projects as they are presented.

Week 1 Assignments (August 27 – 31)

Monday – Review classroom rules and expectations, learn to log-in to computers, pre--testing. Students will receive a handout that parents & students will need to sign and then return to school.  This will be the 1st grade of the semester.

Tuesday—Review of toolbars and functions of word processor, and file management

Wednesday—Begin formatting of basic documents using UIL standards, types of memos

Thursday---Class activity for advanced formatting options and controls, AutoFormat and other similar controls.

Friday—Signed Classroom agreement due.

BCIS 1 (Business Computer Information Systems) Course Description

 

The prerequisite for this course is Keyboarding.  The student will implement personal and interpersonal skills to strengthen individual performance in the workplace and in society and to make a successful transition to the workforce and/or postsecondary education. Students apply technical skills to address business applications of emerging technologies. This course is a technology applications credit for ˝ to 1 credit.  1 Technology credit is required for graduation.

BCIS 1 (Business Computer Information Systems)

Syllabus

 

Students will learn or review basic word processing applications in the form of memos, letters, tables, newsletters and other documentation used in the business word.  We will explore the wide range of uses of the word processing applications with Microsoft Word. 

 

Students will also explore the functions, formulas and formatting of Excel our spreadsheet applications.  They will learn to use the appropriate charts and graphics available in this program to create visual graphics commonly applied in the business world.

 

Database applications are becoming more and more popular and we will use the Access database program to learn the many ways available to manipulate data, numerical and text type, to generate reports and forms used in business. 

 

PowerPoint is the presentation program we will use to create visual presentations that can be used to present in both small viewing and large viewing situations. 

 

Students will be using a combination of textbook lessons, teacher created lessons and projects created from their own research.  Student work will be saved to the network and the assignments will be graded on the network using the editing tools available.  Printing will not be used on a regular basis.

Friday -- Quick Quiz Lesson 1 vocabulary.  Create a letter of introduction about yourself.  Examples given but student must introduce themselves.

(DTP) Desktop Publishing Course Description

The technology applications curriculum has four strands: foundations, information acquisition, work in solving problems, and communication. Through the study of technology applications foundations, including technology-related terms, concepts, and data input strategies; students learn to make informed decisions about technologies and their applications. The efficient acquisition of information includes the identification of task requirements; the plan for using search strategies; and the uses of technology to access, analyzes, and evaluates the acquired information. By using technology as a tool that supports the work of individuals and groups in solving problems, students will select the technology appropriate for the task, synthesize knowledge, create a solution, and evaluate the results. Students communicate information in different formats and to diverse audiences. A variety of technologies will be used. Students will analyze and evaluate the results.

DTP Syllabus

Students will learn to use a variety of software to design publications.  We will create print media, videos; explore some graphic design as well.  Desktop publishing is primarily the exploration of Design as it is used in marketing products.

Students will use Word, Movie Maker, MS Publisher, digital cameras, Adobe design products such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and for web design GoLive and other available media.

Students will be given a mixture of daily assignments and projects where the student will create the graphics and design layouts for different types of marketing requirements.  We will explore the importance of consistency and themes used in print and advertising materials to meet different public demands and needs.

Students will learn to appropriately apply the Desktop Publishing standards using the Elements of Design and the Principles of design and we will also explore the History of Desktop Publishing  and the possible uses of print  or other media in the future as technology continues to change.

Course Description

 

Students recognize, evaluate, and prepare for a rapidly evolving global business environment that requires flexibility and adaptability. Students apply technical skills to address business applications of emerging technologies. Students enhance reading, writing, computing, communications, and reasoning skills and apply them to the business environment.

Dual Credit BCIS 2

 

BCIS2 dual credit is based upon the Amarillo College curriculum.  Class grading will be adjusted slightly for the high school grade side and the syllabus
and other information will be posted as soon as we are able to access the AC site.

Computer Rules

Students must comply with the computer access rules required by the district in the student handbook.

Students are not allowed to access the Internet unless given permission to do so by the teacher.

E-mail, Face Book, My Space, chat rooms, diaries or any other kind of communication tool will not be allowed.

Any malfunction or odd behavior by the computer must be reported immediately.

Grading Policy – BCIS1, Desktop Publishing & BIMM

Test/Projects = 50% 

·                     (projects may be counted as more than 1 test grade

·                     Students will be informed in advance of the grade distribution of projects.

Daily Grades = 30%

·                     Includes daily work & quiz types of grades

Participation Grades = 20%

·                     Includes active participation in step-by-step for 1st time learning activities.

·                     Assisted group/independent activities.

·                     Active working/participation on a random basis for projects.

Grading Policy Dual Credit -

 

This class is predominately determined by the AC teacher.  However,  I choose the grade distribution for the High School class grades. 

This is the reason this class has a different grading policy than my other classes.

 

Test/Projects = 50% 

§                     Regular Chapter Tests are counted 1 time at 50%

§                     Major Exams in the Prentice Hall Online Site are counted twice

§                     Major Exams in the TIA Lecture Book are counted twice

Lab Grades = 30%

§                     These are the labs done each week

Activity Grades = 20%

These are for actively participating in the Practice Tests available online.
