Cameron Armstrong: Led White Deer to the regional finals.

Cameron Cluck: Made first team at receiver, defensive back.

Nazareth senior wide receiver Cameron Cluck and White Deer senior defensive lineman Cameron Armstrong lead a strong contingent of Amarillo-area players named to the 2007 Texas Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State football team released Monday.

Cluck and Armstrong earned first-team honors, adding icing to their stellar seasons in leading their respective teams to the playoffs.

Cluck played a key role in Nazareth's run to a 12-2 record and a state quarterfinal finish and pulls off a rare double, earning first-team honors on both sides of the ball at wide receiver and defensive back.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Cluck caught 65 passes for 1,042 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. He also ran 22 times for 175 yards and two touchdowns.

As a defensive back, Cluck made 133 tackles and intercepted nine passes.

"I can't say enough good things about Cameron and what he meant to our team," said Nazareth coach Rocky Smart. "Anytime we needed a play, he seemed to come up with it. He's more of a quiet leader, but he was a catalyst for our offense and on defense played safety and made more tackles than most linebackers."

Armstrong is no stranger to all-state status, earning second-team honors a year ago. This year, the 6-0, 240-pounder was a nightmare for offensive linemen in helping White Deer to a 10-2 record and a regional final appearance.

Armstrong recorded a school-record 16 quarterback sacks, made 79 assisted tackles and had 30 solo stops.

"This is just awesome and a well-deserved honor," said White Deer coach Wade Wilson. "Cameron led us in tackles last year and was second this year. Those numbers usually go to a linebacker.

"He's a real hard-working kid and has been for a long time. This is a culmination of several years of hard work because he isn't the biggest lineman, but he is very strong. He deserves something like this, big time. Obviously, he made enough noise on the football field that people took notice."

Three of Cluck's teammates earned second-team all-state honors, while three area players gained third-team status.

The Nazareth players on the second team are junior quarterback Nicky Rowland, senior linebacker Tyler Cornett and senior kick returner Josh Braddock. Braddock also was honorable mention at running back.

"I tell our guys if they work as hard as they can and we have a good season as a team, the individual awards will come," Smart said. "Those four guys definitely were leaders for us with their work ethic and the extra time they put into our team. They all had great seasons."

Memphis senior lineman Steven Morris led the three area third-team selections making the squad on offense and defense. Quanah junior running back Tevin Mitchell and Clarendon junior offensive lineman Alton Gaines join Morris on the third team.

Alto quarterback Tarlandus Mitchell was the offensive player of the year. Mitchell threw for 1,658 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushed for 1,202 yards and 23 touchdowns in leading Alto to the Division I state title.

Munday lineman Samuel Nunez and Alto linebacker Clayton Scott shared the defensive players of the year. Nunez made 128 tackles for the Division II state champs, while Scott averaged 15 tackles per game.

Munday coach Pat Corcoran and Alto coach Kieth Gardner shared coach of the year honors.
