This Old Bell
How old
are you old bell? When you were purchased in 1971 from Mrs. Crumpacker for $200,
what was your use before then? Were you a church bell to be rung for church
services or rung
to signal for a fire or city meeting? If only you could tell us what you
have seen before 1971.
In 1971 you were given a
resting place along side a statue of the white buck deer, on a trailer
built by Grady Milton. Your service as the White Deer bell started a tradition
followed by many
other schools. The only difference is old bell you have a history unmatched by
any other in the state of Texas.
You see you are not fancy but you still ring the same today as you did fifty
years ago. You do not have
fancy lights and sirens but you have a tradition you started 35 years ago. You
have seen six district championships,
three bi-district championships, two area championships, two regional
championships, two quarter final championships,
one semi-final championship, and one state championship. Since 1971 you have
seen eight White Deer High
School players crowned to the All State team. You have seen 35 queens crowned
for homecoming, have witnessed
171 wins and 193 loses. You have seen it all old bell, and the memories you have
built with fans, players, coaches and
teachers, oh the memories.
Old bell, old White Deer High
School bell, thank you for bringing us together, to cheer for our teams. Thank
you
for the memories, the pride and tradition.
P.S. When Grady pulled the bell in 1971 he tied a rope to the handle of the bell. When passing through the different towns going to a football game he would slow down and ring the bell by pulling on the rope. Thank you Grady for your service to White Deer.
