No. 4 White Deer tops No. 16 Sudan
Fourth-ranked White Deer broke open a tight
game with 4-of-4 three-point shooting in the third quarter and stymied a
rally by No. 16 Sudan in the fourth quarter with accurate free-throw
shooting to secure a 55-45 victory in a Region I-1A Division
quarterfinal Tuesday night at Canyon High.
The teams played through six lead changes and
four ties in the first half and went to intermission with White Deer
leading, 21-18.
Sudan drew first blood in the third quarter to
pull within one, but sophomore Crager Swarb, who was replacing his
injured brother Cameron, hit two 3-pointers in less than minute to give
the Bucks a 27-22 lead. Three-pointers by Parker Petty and another long
range shot by Swarb helped propel the Bucks to a 37-29 lead.
"I'm trying to fill his (Cameron Swarb) shoes.
They're big. It's hard. I couldn't hit shots in the first half, but once
I got over my butterflies, I had confidence," Crager Swarb said.
White Deer coach Warren Swarb said the turning
point was the Bucks' 3-point barrage.
"Coming out in the second half, we're always
trying to win the first three minutes (of the half). Hitting those 3s
was really big. If we miss those, it's a different game," Warren Swarb
said.
The Bucks opened the fourth quarter with
another 3-pointer by Tyler Perryman but still had to shake a Sudan run.
Lander Guntry, who tied Perryman for game-high
honors with 19, made two 3- pointers and a layup to bring the Hornets to
within 40-37 with 4:07 left.
A key offensive rebound and put-back by Buck
Tyler Smith with 1:44 and a basket by Crager Swarb with 1:05 left gave
White Deer a 48-40 lead.
Sudan then began to foul in desperation. The
Bucks converted 8-of-10 shots from the charity stripe to seal it.
White Deer is 20-9 and advances to play in the
regional semifinals in Levelland on Friday.
Sudan finishes 23-10.
